The Raccoon City Incident[]

Tanma Lucrecia 1

On her way home from school, Lucrecia was walking to the subway station that she normally got onto after school, discussing with her friends a surprise welcoming home party for Felicity White, her friend and crush Michael's older sister who was returning to Raccoon City to visit her family. The group went their separate ways so she could go home for a bit while the others went straight to the White family home.

Down in the metro station, she bumped into a security guard, who gave her a strange look due to her revealing clothing. Feeling uncomfortable, she kept her eye on him as she stood on the waiting platform. Minutes went by and she noticed that her car was late; not only this, but no cars had shown up since her arrival. Annoyed due to wanting to make her way to the White home in time for the party, she kept a watchful eye out for her ride, which would prove crucial to her future.

She eventually heard a subway train coming down the rails, and she sighed in relief; unfortunately, little did she know that the train had been hit by zombies, and the conductor was just about to be ripped to shreds by the undead. This combined with the driver's fear and set the subway train at top speed, and by the time it was working its way to the platform upon which Lucrecia stood, it had become dangerously unstable. She heard the sparking and sounds she got an odd feeling from as it whirred down the track, but didn't move until she heard the security guard who had looked at her earlier mutter, "Something's wrong."; hearing this, she began to step away from the platform. As the train reached the platform it derailed and entered the crowded location, careening through, much to everyone's horror. She and the guard ran for the opposite wall, and Lucrecia slammed into it hard. Turning around, she saw as the guard was hit by debris, knocking him unconscious. She lost consciousness soon afterwards, as well.

When she awoke a few minutes later, she saw that the undead had begun to pour out of the wrecked subway and had been biting and consuming the various survivors and deceased alike and were making their way towards her, though they had not noticed that she was still alive. Having dropped her knife at the entrance of the subway due to installed medal detectors, she was unarmed, but noticed that the now-dead guard had a pistol on him. She tried to get the pistol without the undead's noticing, though as they closed distance with her she began to freak out and eventually leaned over and grabbed it. Scared, her initial shots missed or simply grazed the target, but as the zombie reached for her to take a bite she successfully shot it in the head.

Panicked, she fled the metro station and returned to the streets, only to discover that the violence she witnessed below had apparently begun to spread throughout the rest of the city. She collected her wits over the next few minutes, and decided to seek out her friends both to make sure they were alright as well as group with them for safety. Unfortunately, her parents were further away and so she would need to wait to meet up with them.

Eventually she made it to the Michael's home and noticed that the door was open. Exploring the apartment, she found nobody and nothing seemed particularly out of place; however upon attempting to leave again her friends showed their faces—now horribly malformed and more than a little undead. She was forced to put them all down, but had difficulty pulling the trigger when the remains of Michael came at her. In the end she killed him, too. Left in a shocked state, she moved in a trance-like state towards the door, only to have it open wide in front of her. Frightened out of her tranced state, she pulled her gun up and nearly pulled the trigger to a shrieking Felicity. Realizing she was still alive, Lucrecia collapsed into a heap of misery in Felicity's arms. The two stayed here for a while, taking each other's comforts. Though they decided that they needed each other's assistance, they were desperate to find a way out of town and therefore, despite their desire to stick together, decided that it would be more prudent to escaping quicker by splitting up, though they were not incapable of understanding the inherent danger in doing this.

Lucrecia eventually ended up in the local penitentiary, where she ran across death row inmate Jared Wrightsworth Pennington III, who was incarcerated for multiple rape and serial murder charges. While she vaguely knew about his crimes, she chose to let him free anyhow, believing that no one deserved to not be given a fighting chance against the monstrosities that now roamed the city limits. Though he appeared about ready to attack her, much to her intimidation, he instead expressed that he was very grateful to her action and immediately afterwards he swore an oath of debt to her and soon left her side to attempt to escape the city on his own.

By nightfall, neither Lucrecia nor Felicity nor Jared had escaped, though she had encountered both of them multiple times, alongside two other, more psychotic inmates—known as Billy Steve and The Scavenger—alongside several others (including a few near-misses with other individuals such as Officer Kennedy.

Eventually, Lucrecia would come across Jared Wrightsworth again, though the meeting would turn out ill-fated when he chose to sacrifice his own life to save hers. Seeing this she tried to help him but he informed her that he knew the wound was a mortal one. Knowing his fate was now sealed, he reached into a pocket he had fashioned himself on his jail uniform and handed her a key to his family's estate. He then took his dying breath and passed away. Seeing this as a great opportunity to possibly escape or hole up, she contacted Felicity and the two moved on to the Pennington Mansion. Here, not only located a few survivors (Jared's little sister, a maid and the family's pilot), the two also located keys to both an aircraft for the family's airfield as well as ones for a helicopter, also on the field.

Not long after this, the survivors succeeded in escaping the town just in time to avoid the city's destruction.

In the REMake continuity, Lucrecia and her high school group are older and have already graduated high school by 1998 and have begun an amateur paranormal research group that they refer to as the Nightmare Society. On September 21st, 1998 the Society decided to gather together to celebrate Michael "Asmodel" White's birthday early, so that they could do as they wished and not be boxed into what his parents wanted to do as a celebration. They traveled via subway station to the neighboring town of Stone Ville to try and get some paranormal EVPs in its cemetery. Here they rented a cabin and spent five days in the town collecting what they could. They returned to Raccoon City in the very early hours on September 26th (roughly 6 AM), having no idea of the outbreak that had begun to stir in their absence. Lucrecia splits up from the rest of the group at Central Station to go walk home while the rest took a cab to the White family home as she could not fit in the vehicle. Upon seeing a police officer on the platform, she ditched her pocket knife behind a nearby trash bin, instead hoping to return to get it upon a later return trip.

It was here that she first realized the danger around her when a subway train derailed near the platform she was on, killing many of the waiting citizens as well as the police officer. When zombies emerge from the damaged train car and start feasting on surviving citizens, Lucrecia grabs the dead officer's service pistol and flees into a side room. Another survivor who had already hidden in there tried to throw her out but she dazed him and hid deeper into the room, leaving him to get killed by the zombies as they his dazing distracted him from properly closing and locking the door. Although the creatures nearly discover Lucrecia too, they get distracted by another survivor shooting at them back on the platform. Lucrecia then slipped out unnoticed and made her way onto the rails themselves, walking down the line until she reached a free exit one block up from the station.

Returning to the city streets, Lucrecia makes her way through street after street, eventually finding refuge in the Grill 13 on Davies Street. Here she met the company's owner, Langley Henriksen, a 42-year-old man. After Grill 13 is compromised, the pair continue together down Davies Street, before heading east on Flower Street to the back alley that led to the Callahan family home. Although she got home, her apartment had been overrun by zombified animals that had broken loose from the nearby Eagle's Pet Shop. The attempt was a failure as she did not find direct evidence of where her parents had gotten to. Disappointed, she was comforted by Langley and the two continued on after she had collected some supplies. Leaving the apartment the two next headed west down Ennerdale Street and past RC Tattoo. However the two ran into a large horde and having grown attached to Lucrecia and realizing there was no other escape, Langley tried to distract the zombies and hold them off while she ran for cover, planning to try to work his way back to her. However he didn't get far and Lucrecia watched in horror as he was bitten. Hearing him screaming as he fled in the other direction, she ducked into Grady's Inn at Warren and Ennerdale for shelter. Here, she passed out from sheer exhaustion.

When she woke up some time in the afternoon she looked around for Langley but realizing he wasn't there, she assumed he had to have died in the attack. Hurt but needing to find her friends, she continued on. She would never come to find out that Langley had in fact made it to Raccoon City Police Department where he was quickly shot and killed after his infection symptoms began to manifest. Lucrecia leaves Grady's and heads west, hoping to eventually make it to Michael's house to at least check on her friends despite his living miles away, close to Douglas Prison. However she ran into a roadblock outside of the Umbrella Sales Office and ducked inside to avoid a group of Hunters roaming the area. While inside she encountered an Umbrella employee poring over paperwork who was startled upon seeing her. He tried to feign friendliness to not alert suspicion to his actual intent of destroying documents and remove some level of paper trail that could potentially tie Umbrella to the outbreak, and made small talk with her while he continued to try to complete his task unabated, finding out where she was heading and why. When a pair of Hunters track Lucrecia into the building, she is forced to kill them to save the employee. His humanity gets the better of him and as thanks, he informs her of a tunnel leading from underneath the building straight to Douglas Prison (amongst other areas) which should be free of infection. She takes his offer and he doesn't follow her, instead staying behind to destroy paperwork alone.

Although initially starting at a brusque pace, she slowed down significantly the further down the tunnels she went, partially to conserve energy and partially out of the creepiness of the seemingly abandoned tunnels in comparison to the utter chaos on the streets above. Occasionally the walls would shake and debris would loosen from the ceiling, presumably from explosions occurring on the surface. Within an hour and a half, she reached Douglas Prison. She was forced to avoid a Tyrant known as The Warden which stalks the halls with his heavily mutated dog referred to as Howler, moving through the visitor's side of the prison, Block C & D, and finally making her way into Death Row. Here she encounters three survivors, still locked in their cells: Jared Wrightsworth Pennington III, Billy Steve, and Joseph "The Scavenger" Coyote, a set of serial killers.

Jared.

She is then faced with a dilemma—open the locks and give them a chance at survival or let them rot in their cells. If she chooses to save them she must travel to the prison's electrical systems room, turn the panel on, return to the main office and open the cell doors. This affects later portions of the story. Although it may seem counter-intuitive, the better choice is to let them out as the three will get out no matter what and releasing the locks yourself endears Jared to Lucrecia and he will protect her in certain story moments. Canonically-speaking, she releases the inmates; as such, the rest of this background follows this set of events.

Upon being released, Billy and Joseph decided to travel together and attempted to recruit Jared, though he turned them down, considering what got them into prison as "disgusting and depraved." Billy shrugged it off and they moved through the prison until they located Lucrecia under the interest of Joseph and surprise her, knocking her down and confiscating her shotgun. He revealed that he planned to eat her as he was in fact a cannibal, and while Billy was uninterested in her, he had no qualms about letting Joseph do as he desired. At this point a giant shadow hovers over the two and knocks them down. Jared had come to Lucrecia's rescue. Jared tells them that they will leave her alone, as she was the one who released them and he would honor her choice with a reprieve. While Billy aims the shotgun at him and prepares to pull the trigger, but Jared tells him that he better not waste a shell on him as he may need it to get past the Warden. Billy begrudgingly agrees and convinces Joseph to abandon his prey. The two leave the prison, and Jared tells Lucrecia that he believed in honor and that he while women were his preferred targets, he would protect her from harm and never hunt her. Thankful if a bit horrified, she and Jared then worked together to leave the prison, as well. Although The Warden was alerted and chased them out, they successfully lost him and Howler. Jared and Lucrecia then decide to go their own separate ways, with Jared telling Lucrecia that he had to return to his own home and make sure his sister was safe.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The original version of the character was written while the creator himself was still underage. With the release of the REMakes, there was finally a reason to rewrite their story without retconning themselves, as the creator hates retconning in general and seeks to not retcon themselves, even when it detrimentally affects their characters or stories.
